2020, 6 photographs and digital collages
This series of images/collages is a gesture that defies the act of constant defiance. It is a breath of fresh air, a letting-go, in a time of uncertain futures. Every one of the images, from the sky to the tarot card I pulled the day I began this project, was created at home. Each image conjures a comforting place, whether spiritual, nostalgic, physical, or otherwise. From within this cocoon, I can Just Be, I can recharge, get ready, breathe, and more still.
My artistic practice is grounded in a search for liberating creativity. My first photo series was a way to share my perspective on New Orleans from a specific standpoint, focusing on the city’s intangibility, whereas subsequent projects have explored my life experience as a Black African woman. The latter seek to break away from what defines us by committing to a subjective process that eschews totalitarian forms of representation.
